From the front they read as a smart tapered trouser — neat pleats below the waistband, a slim leg that follows your shape and a neat ankle length that sits beautifully with trainers or boots. Pull them on and they move the way leggings do.

The high waistband is elasticated the whole way round with a drawstring tie, so you set them exactly where you want them and they stay there. No zip to fuss with, nothing digging in after lunch and nothing to hitch back up on the school run.

And there are real pockets. Proper deep side pockets for your phone and keys, which sounds like a small thing until you’ve spent a day without them.

Navy is the easy alternative to black. It’s less stark, lovely with cream, camel and grey, and smart enough to wear straight into the office. Try them with a white tee and trainers at the weekend, or a longline knit and ankle boots for dinner.
